* READING IS FUNDAMENTAL: Dr. Carmelita Williams (l), director of Norfolk State University's Center of Excellence for Service Learning and Literacy and liaison to the Reading Is Fundamental national program, is honored by University President Dr. Marie V. McDemmond and fellow colleagues at a University reception for her recent nomination as president of the International Reading Association for the 2000-2001 term.
A member of the association since 1968, Williams is the first Black elected president from a historically Black university. One of her first tasks as president is to create a task force that will look into teaching reading in diverse cultures, specifically in inner-city schools. The International Reading Association has about 93,000 members in 47 countries.
