Bonds 1st player to steal 500 bases and hit 500 homers
Jet, July 14, 2003
San Francisco Giants Barry Bonds stole his 500th base before he scored the winning run in a recent game against the Los Angeles Dodgers, becoming the first player with 500 home runs and 500 stolen bases.
The founding member of the 500-500 club, Bonds drew a walk then stole second base without knowing of his milestone until the sellout crowd's cheers swelled to a roar in San Francisco. He then uprooted the base and waved to the crowd.
"(Dodgers closer Eric) Gagne's one of the best closers you'll ever see," said Bonds, who turns 39 on July 24. "I thought about (stealing second) because you never know if you're going to get another chance against him. When I got to second base, my only thought was that we had a chance to win."
Bonds also hit his 500th career home run against the Dodgers on April 18, 2001. Mostly known as a slugger, Bonds rarely gets recognized for his blazing speed. "In the last at-bat, he was dominant without hitting a home run," Giants manager Felipe Alou said of the five-time National League MVP. "I hope people don't judge Barry only by the home runs he hits. He's a supreme player."
No other player ever recorded 400 homers and 400 steals before Bonds, who got a surprise visit from his cancer-stricken father, Bobby, in the clubhouse before the game.
