Jazz stars play the music of Luther Vandross on new CD 'Forever, For Always, For Luther'

Jet, July 19, 2004

The music of singer Luther Vandross, who continues to make progress after a major stroke last year, gets a jazz-flavored twist on the upcoming CD, Forever, For Always, For Luther.

George Benson does a jazzy remake of Take You Out, Kirk Whalum plays his soulful sax on Any Love and Paul Jackson Jr. reinvents Never Too Much. And Donny Hathaway's daughter, singer Lalah Hathaway, gives a tour de force interpretation of Forever, For Always For Love. The CD ends with trumpeter Rick Braun's starry-eyed version of Vandross' Grammy winning Dance With My Father.

Others featured on the CD set for release July 27, include Boney James, Dave Koz, Richard Elliott and Brian Culbertson.

Vandross' mother, Mary Ida Vandross, said:" I really enjoy and appreciate this wonderful jazz tribute to my son and his musical legacy. I'm hoping that this album will touch you as it has me, and will help to keep Luther in the hearts and minds of his fans around the world."

Luther Vandross suffers from diabetes, which contributed to his life-threatening stroke. He is making remarkable progress at a rehabilitation facility.

"This album is a celebration of Luther because he's here and he's in the present and he's getting better," said producer Rex Rideout.

A portion of the proceeds from the CD will go to the American Diabetes Association's Forever, For Always, For Luther Fund to help find a cure and make a difference in the lives of millions of Americans with diabetes. Fans can also make additional donations to the American Diabetes Association in Alexandria, VA.
