Former Cleveland TV Producer Wins Racial Discrimination Lawsuit
Jet, Dec 20, 1999
A former TV news producer recently won a $1.25 million racial discrimination judgment against Scripps Howard Broadcasting Co. and its station WEWS in Cleveland.
Attorneys for Cheryl Dickson said her firing in 1992 was the result of a pattern of racial bias. Lawyers for WEWS and Scripps Howard denied the accusation and argued that Dickson was fired for poor performance.
Dickson had worked at WEWS for 3 1/2 years as the station's first Black producer and participated in winning four local Emmy awards.
Dickson said, "Justice has prevailed. In the end, everything I went through was worth it, but I hope no one else has to go through this again."
The damages were decided by a jury, which also awarded Dickson's attorney fees.
