Jet, July 21, 2003

MORE HISTORY FOR PIONEERING FORMER BALTIMORE FIRE CHIEF: Ex-Baltimore Fire Chief Herman Williams, Jr. (2nd, l) is congratulated by Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley, his wife, Marjorie Williams, and their son, acclaimed talk show host Montel Williams, after the quarters of the 25th Street Station were renamed in honor of the former fire chief during a ceremony at that firehouse in Baltimore. Chief Williams is the first Black to have a firehouse renamed in his honor in Baltimore. He served the city of Baltimore's fire department for more than 47 years and made history in the city in 1992 when he became its first Black fire chief. Chief Williams retired in 2001. Last year he penned a book, Firefighter, about his experiences and struggles battling blazes and racism (JET, Feb. 25, 2002).
