Jet, Jan 8, 2001

Education apparently has become increasingly more important to Blacks as a recent Census Bureau report found that they are earning bachelor's degrees and high school diplomas more than ever before.

The bureau's Current Population Survey shows that 25.6 percent of Americans over age 25 have bachelor's degrees and 84.1 percent have high school diplomas.

In the report, it was found that the biggest improvements came among Blacks over 25: 78.5 percent had completed high school, compared with 66.2 percent a decade ago; 16.5 percent held bachelor's degrees, compared with 11.3 percent in 1990.

Bachelor's degree-holders numbered 21.3 percent and high school graduates totaled 77.6 percent.
