Jet, Jan 8, 2001
A memorial service is planned for Gail Fisher, who co-starred on the popular series "Mannix" for eight years. Fisher recently died of cardiac arrest in a Los Angeles hospital. She was 65.
Fisher's daughter, Samara Fixe, confirmed for JET that her mother died at the Brotman Medical Center in L.A. "She had emphysema and was diabetic. The death certificate said cardiopulmonary arrest," she said. "She had been going downhill pretty much."
Fisher, born in Potter's Crossing, NJ, was one of the first Black performers to land a national television commercial when, in 1963, she be came a spokesperson for All Detergent.
However, it was as Peggy Fair on the hit drama "Mannix" with Mike Connors that brought her international attention. On that show, which ran from 1967-75, Fisher won an Emmy and two Golden Globe awards.
Fisher, who attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, appeared on stage in A Raisin in the Sun and Purlie Victorious. On TV, she also performed on "Fantasy Island," "General Hospital," and "Medical Center."
A Los Angeles memorial service was slated for January 6. Pursuant to her wishes, her ashes were scattered over the Pacific Ocean.
She is survived by two daughters, Fixe and Jole Levy, and five grand-children.
