MOTHER-SON GRADUATES: Doris Rice holds her chest as she looks at her son, Brian Rice, as he fights to hold back tears after they both received their high school equivalency certificates at the California Rehabilitation Center in Norco, CA. Doris, 64, who is serving time for the possession of narcotics, didn't learn until the day of the graduation when her son's name was called that he too was serving time.

Brian, who turned 35 on the day of the graduation, is doing time for burglary. The two had served time in two different prisons before they were brought together in the only mixed men's and women's ceremony in the state for inmates earning their GEDs. Each was unaware that the other studied at the same time for the certificate. It marked the first time a mother and son graduated together.
