`Blue'

Jet, July 16, 2001

`BLUE': Phylicia Rashad and Michael McElroy star in Blue, a play by Charles Randolph-Wright that recently opened off-Broadway at the Gramercy Theater in Manhattan, NY. Directed by Sheldon Epps and presented by the Roundabout Theater Company, Blue spans nearly 20 years in the life of an affluent South Carolina family.

Rashad portrays Peggy Clark, the domineering matriarch of the family who is obsessed with Blue Williams (McElroy), a soul-singing specter invisible to the cast that includes Randall Sheppard as easy-going patriarch Samuel Clark Jr., Hill Harper as adult son Reuben Clark, and Howard W. Overshown as son Samuel III. The production also stars Chad Tucker (young Reuben and Blue Williams Jr.), Messeret Stroman (Samuel III's girlfriend LaTonya) and Jewell Robinson (grandmother Tillie Clark).
