CHESS ANYONE?: Grandmaster Maurice Ashley literally throws himself into the game of chess at the Seattle Center House in Seattle, WA. Ashley, the first Black to earn the title of Grandmaster in chess, is among the 58 players competing for $25,000 in the 2003 U.S. Chess Championship Games. The event is one of the few tournaments in the world that allows players to earn an international title. This is the first year that the United States has ever had a Black qualify for the competition.
