How to dress for fitness success
Jet, August 2, 2004
Can't seem to fit more fitness into your daily life? The problem may not be your willpower, but your wardrobe.
A study done for the American Council on Exercise found that people are more likely to take walks during the workday if they're wearing comfortable clothing.
So whether you want to do toe stands at the copier, leg lunges down the hallway or walk around the block on your lunch break, here's how to make sure you're always dressed the part:
Get loose. During summer, always wear loose, lightweight clothing that allows air to circulate to keep you cool. Choose pieces in fabrics that absorb water, like cotton, so you won't be a sweaty mess.
Kick it, Proper shoes are must-haves for the physically active. Invest in a good pair of athletic shoes or flexible walking shoes with a low heel that provide proper support and cushioning for your heel and forefoot. Keep your fitness shoes under your desk or inside your car trunk. And don't forget the cotton socks.
Suit yourself. Go for double-duty gear that looks good in the conference room and feels good on that five-flight hike up the stairs. If your office dress code is relaxed, sport khaki slacks, capri pants, lightweight denim jeans and loose, airy skirts. Dress in layers that you can easily remove as you heat up, like a lightweight cardigan and tank top set or a loose button-down shirt paired with a T-shirt. If the dress code is strict, wear layered ensembles like a lightweight two-piece suit and a tank so that you can remove the jacket when you exercise.
Dress under. Your underwear can make or break your workout. Don't wear undergarments that will ride up, get stuck or irritate you in any way while you move. Women should wear a sports bra or a bra with comfortable straps and good cup support. Think cotton, think comfortable. Save the bikini thongs for Saturday night.
Brighten up. Look and feel cool in the summer heat by wearing bright colors when you exercise. Bright colors reflect blazing hot sunlight and makes you visible to motorists.
Tote it. If you don't want to sweat out your office attire, bring a change of clothes with you to work. Toss your workout shorts, shirt and shoes in a tote bag, then change into your fitness gear on your lunch break, right after work or whenever the desire to exercise strikes.
