Remembering Mandela's son

REMEMBERING MANDELA'S SON: During a memorial service at the Central Methodist church in Johannesburg, South Africa, former South African President Nelson Mandela (I) sits next to his grandson, Mandla, who lost his father, Atty. Makgatho Mandela, to AIDS. Mandela recently announced that Makgatho, his eldest son, died of AIDS-related complications, saying the only way to fight the disease's stigma was to speak openly about it (JET, January 24).

More than 5 million of South Africa's 45 million people are infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, more people than in any other country. An estimated 600 die of AIDS-related complications every day.
