NEW COPS NEEDED: New York City Police Officers Ryan Jackson (rear) and Carlos Suarez display police recruitment information to youth interested in law enforcement careers. The NYPD is sponsoring major recruiting efforts for the 35,000-member force. It is the nation's largest and most ethnically diverse.
Recruitment efforts reflect the increase in fatalities of law enforcement officers across the U.S. as reported by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF). At midyear, 39 officers were killed in shootings compared to 27 for the first half of 2006. In addition, NLEOMF reported the total number of fatalities among officers from January to June of this year, which include shootings, traffic-related fatalities, aircraft accidents and drownings, is 101. However, the total number of deaths for the entire year of 2006 was 145. This year's six-month death total is the highest in three decades with most occurring in traffic-related incidents.
