AZTEC ALUMNUS COACH: After 20 years in the major leagues, baseball All-Star Tony Gwynn is a rookie again. With his name painted on the centerfield fence, San Diego State University first-year coach Gwynn watches his team's workout in San Diego. The stadium was named after the eight-time National League batting champion after San Diego Padres' owner John Moores rebuilt the stadium at a cost of over $2 million.

In September of 2001, Gwynn was selected for the position and served as a volunteer assistant last season (JET, Oct. 8, 2001). Gwynn, whose son is an All-American outfielder for the Aztecs, was on both the basketball and baseball team at San Diego State before he played for the Padres for 20 years. He retired at the end of the 2001 season.
