First Lady honors the AKA Sorority: First Lady Laura Bush receives an ovation from Juanita Doty (r) and others at the Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) convention in Nashville. In her address to the national sorority, she praised its work: "For nearly a century, the women of AKA have played a vital role in advancing social change, oftentimes against great odds ...

What started as a small band of women has grown into an army of determined sisters." Alpha Kappa Alpha dates back to 1908, when it became the country's first Greek-letter organization established by Black college women, according to the organization.
