The remix of Usher: red-hot R&B superstar still sizzling 'Yeah!' Yeah!! Yeah!!!
Jet, Feb 7, 2005
Superstar Usher is still sizzling from the striking success of his blockbuster album Confessions. The record-breaking milestones the album have made are endless, and his national Truth Tour was just as phenomenal.
Released last March, Confessions sold more than 1 million copies in its debut week, the highest chart debut ever for an R&B artist. To date, with sales of more than 8 million copies, including last October's Confessions (Special Edition) that houses four bonus tracks including the electrifying duet with sultry singer Alicia Keys, My Boo, Confessions was the highest-selling record in the U.S. in 2004, doubling the year's second-best-selling release.
The red-hot R&B star has more than proved he has longevity in the industry. For the first time in 34 years, one artist has had four songs reach No. 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 in a calendar year (the Jackson 5 did it in 1970). The quartet of hits: the crunk-infused Yeah! featuring rappers Lil' Jon and Ludacris; Usher's trademark crooning in Bum; the admission of infidelity in Confessions Pt. II; and My Boo reigned at No. 1 for a record 28 weeks.
Not only did Usher have four No. 1 hits in the same year--at one time having three in the Top 10 in the same week-but the sexy crooner is the first artist to have all four consecutive releases top the charts since Mariah Carey in 1995. Also, needless to say, Usher's fabulous foursome kept the radio on lock and were the most-listened-to songs of 2004. According to the Nielsen BDS, they collectively ruled No. 1 for more than half the year.
"My feeling has always been that Confessions would be a landmark album for me," Usher admitted.
As one of People Magazine's Sexiest Men Alive, the 26-year-old singer is simply unstoppable. Answering the call for more, the world-class entertainer gave fans what they wanted to see and hear during his Truth Tour, launched in August. Paired with producer-turned-rapper Kanye West, who backed his solo debut College Dropout, Usher dazzled millions of fans during the 35-city, 2-month entertainment extravaganza that featured Usher's acrobatic dance moves, his mountain-top abs, soulful voice and quick costume changes. As one of 2004's top 20 tours, the Truth Tour grossed $29.1 million.
Usher, a bona fide ladies' man who is enjoying the single life to its fullest, has made time to accept dozens of music awards.
In 2002 he won his first Grammy for U Remind Me. The following year he won another for U Don't Have to Call.
Last August he earned two MTV Video Music Awards for his Yeah! video, but perhaps his arrival by water to the Miami show in his massive, luxury silver yacht or his singing the steamy hit Confessions Pt. II while water streamed down his chiseled, bare chest left a lasting impression. Fans went crazy.
Less than a month later he was honored with three World Music Awards in the soon-to-be-repeated categories of Best Male Artist, Best Male Pop Artist and Best R&B Artist. He went on to sweep at the American Music Awards, winning in all four categories in which he was nominated and lit up the stage with a sexy performance of My Boo with Keys.
Usher's biggest night was at the Billboard Music Awards last year in Las Vegas. The incredible dancer and singer dominated from the moment he opened the show by dropping from the ceiling to perform Bad Girl while a bevy of beautiful women clad in white parkas, briefs and snow boots danced and spun around him.
Usher walked away with an astounding 11 awards that night-Yeah, 11!
On February 13, Usher is looking to add to his list of accolades. He is nominated for eight Grammy Awards.
"I feel like I shouldn't celebrate too early--I'll definitely take it one step at a time," Usher said. "I recognize that this hard work did not go unnoticed and if I do not win album of the year, which is the one I'm most interested in winning, then so be it."
The R&B Romeo capped off an incredible 2004 with the world premiere of his mini-movie Rhythm City Volume I: Caught Up that aired on "New Year's Eve: Live From Times Square" on FOX television. The 20-minute movie featured the balladeer's smooth moves and four songs from Confessions-Seduction, Caught Up, Red Light and Take Your Hand. His celebrity friends Joy Bryant, Clifton Powell, Naomi Campbell and Sean Combs all appeared in the short film.
Usher, Jon and Luda had to do it again, and the Atlanta-based trio collaborated for the Lil' Jon-produced ballad Lovers & Friends, a track on Lil' Jon's recent album.
Though it's only the beginning of the New Year, Usher is already hard at work on fresh projects. He will burn up the stage with the concert event of the year from San Juan's Coliseo de Puerto Rico on March 5. Usher is set to perform a 90-minute live show titled "One Night, One Star: Usher Live," that will air on Showtime.
The busy artist is also working hard shooting a new movie in Los Angeles for Lion's Gate Films called Dying for Dolly.
All of his success has fans jumping and saying Yeah! Yeah!! Yeah!!! and Usher promises the party won't stop soon. "2004 was beautiful for me. 2005-there's more in store."
