Joann Loveless recently was elected the 22nd International Grand Basileus of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. during its 52nd international Boule in Detroit.

This year's theme was Vision: The Foundation of Endless Possibilities.

Dr. Ian Smith offered the keynote public address. As the spokesperson for State Farm's The 50 Million Pound Challenge, Smith and State Farm presented the sorority with a $5,000 check to be awarded to the region with the highest number of team participants.

Mother Love, a member of the sorority, facilitated a health forum on diabetes and healthy living that was hosted by the National Education Fund.

The talk show host and author lost more than 100 pounds and has improved her diabetes management through swimming and changing her cooking and eating habits (JET, March 21, 2005).

Founded by seven educators on Nov. 12, 1922, the leading national service organization is the only African-American sorority to be founded on a predominantly White college campus, Butler University in Indiana. The hallmarks of its programs and activities are public service, leadership development and education of youth.
