On the bench

On The Bench: Nobel Laureate and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Toni Morrison christens her "bench by the road" on Sullivan's Island, SC. The installation marks the area as a point of entry for slaves to America. It was inspired by her comment "there's no small bench by the road" in an interview noting that her slavery novel Beloved was written from a need for literature commemorating the lives and history of slaves.
