If Tenn. Sen. Fred Thompson retires, one of the first to consider running for the seat will be Rep. Harold Ford, Jr., now a second generation lawmaker. Democrats expect to field Senate candidates in North and South Carolina. Denver Mayor Wellington Webb declined to seek a Senate seat in Colorado.
