HONORING A HERO: Newark, N.J. Mayor Sharpe James presents the key to the city to Carl Brashear, retired U.S. Navy master diver who was the subject of the blockbuster film Men of Honor, at the city's grand opening ceremony of the Newark Black Film Festival's 27th year in Newark Symphony Hall. Famed actor Cuba Gooding Jr.

portrayed Brashear in the film based on Brashear's true story as the Navy's first Black diver, first Black master diver and the first amputee to earn master-diver certification who later became a Master Chief, the Navy's highest rank for an enlisted man.
