Howard University senior Marianna Ofosu named only Black U.S. Rhodes Scholar for 2003

A senior majoring in classical civilizations at Howard University in Washington, DC, is the only Black among 32 students in the United States named to the 2003 class of Rhodes Scholars.

Marianna Ofosu, who will study development at Oxford, is the daughter of a Ghanaian father and a Polish mother. She is president of the Howard honors program, and has interned at the Embassy of Rwanda.

Created in 1902, the Rhodes Scholarships provide two or three years of study at the University of Oxford in England. Recipients were chosen among 981 applicants representing 341 colleges and universities in a nationwide competition. About 95 scholars are selected worldwide each year.
