Mayor's masked ball
Jet, Feb 10, 2003
Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin (2nd, r) celebrates with her special invited guests, actor-comedian Chris Tucker (r), and Maurice Jenkins (l), regional vice president of Southeast Field Operations for the United Negro College Fund (UNCF), and music legend Mary Wilson of the famed Supremes, during the UNCF's 19th Annual Mayor's Masked Ball at the Atlanta Hilton and Towers Hotel in Atlanta.
Below, Franklin and Tucker greet former Atlanta Mayors (l-r) Bill Campbell and wife, Sharon; Andrew Young and wife, Carolyn; and Maynard Jackson and wife, Valerie. The black-tie affair raised more than $550,000 to benefit the member institutions of UNCF. The MASKED (Mankind Assisting Students Kindle Educational Dreams) Awards were presented to outstanding persons from the local and national societies who have made exceptional contributions to UNCF through their financial resources and/or quintessential service. This year's honorees included actress Loretta Devine, singer Dennis Edwards, attorney Willie Gary, retired catering director Dennis Lindler, and UNCF member institutions' presidents Dr. Robert Franklin, Dr. Thomas Cole, The Honorable Dr. Louis W. Sullivan and Dr. Audrey Manley, who each retired at the end of the 2001-2002 academic year.
