Seattle NAACP branch chooses new leader

* SEATTLE NAACP BRANCH CHOOSES NEW LEADER: Carl Mack (l) hands the gavel to Alfoster Garrett Jr., a Seattle attorney who was named the new president of the Seattle-King County branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in Seattle. Garrett had served as the branch's vice president.

In 2002, Garrett represented a man in a wrongful-termination case, securing the biggest single-settlement victory for the local organization, Last year, he helped several families file a $10 million racial-discrimination claim against the Kent School District, alleging undue force by school security officers against Black students. Mack, who was elected in Nov. 2002, announced his resignation as president of the organization in order to become the executive director of the Virginia-based National Society of Black Engineers.
