National Headliners
Jet, July 19, 1999
Just as Ambassador to Gambia George Haley settled down to leave his family imprint on a country which his brother, writer Alex Haley, started to do so well with his book Roots, the uncertainties of diplomatic life caught up with him. The State Department was forced to close down the embassy because of the fear of attack.
Also closed were embassies in Liberia, Togo, Madagascar, Namibia, and Senegal...Don't forget the summer display of African head-wear on view at the National Museum of African Art in the nation's capital. The "hat's off" show that ranges from a red feather headdress from Cameroon to a delicately embroidered hat from Kenya opens July 18 and will stay until December 26.
