`EBONY Night On Broadway' With `The Lion King' Benefits The United Negro College Fund
Jet, July 19, 1999
EBONY went to Broadway to raise funds for the United Negro College Fund (UNCF).
The "EBONY Night on Broadway" featured a benefit performance of the hit Broadway musical The Lion King at the New Amsterdam Theater in New York City.
Through an exclusive arrangement with EBONY Magazine and Disney Productions, a block of tickets was reserved for special guests, including business clients, employees and friends for the special presentation of the musical.
An exclusive VIP pre-performance reception, sponsored by Fashion Fair Cosmetics, was also held in the theater's New Amsterdam Room and attended by cast members.
The "EBONY Night on Broadway" benefit gala raised $50,000 for UNCF.
Based on Disney's animated film, the Broadway musical is currently sold out through August 2000. South African sensation Lebo M expanded the original score with authentic African music, rhythms and chants. The play is sung and spoken in Sesotho, Swahili, Xhosa, Zulu and English.
