Cooper Returns To WNBA As Coach Of The Phoenix Mercury

Jet, Jan 29, 2001

Cynthia Cooper, retired Houston Comets all-star, recently was hired to coach the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA.

The team did not release details of Cooper's three-year deal.

"I am truly honored and excited about coaching this talented team," said Cooper, a former guard. "I am looking forward to being part of bringing a championship to the city of Phoenix."

Cooper is used to winning championships. In her four-year WNBA career with the Comets, Cooper was the driving force behind the team's four straight championship titles. She retired after last year's championship series.

The 37-year-old star was the WNBA championship series MVP all four years of the league's existence and she led the league in scoring her first three years.

Cooper will replace former women's basketball star Cheryl Miller, who resigned as coach in December.
