40th anniversary celebration

Jet, Feb 17, 2003

Architect and former Charlotte, NC, mayor Harvey Gantt (1) talks with Clemson University President James Barker (r) as people arrive for a ceremony at Tillman Hall in Clemson, SC. The event was to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Gantt becoming the first Black student to enroll at Clemson University.

Even though the university was the first South Carolina school to integrate, Black enrollment has remained less than 10 percent for the past three decades. Clemson officials say they are trying to attract more Blacks through innovative programs.
