Virginia's new chief justice

Virginia Supreme Court Justice Leroy Rountree Hassell Sr. poses in the court chambers in Richmond, VA. He was recently elected Virginia's first Black chief justice. Hassell, 47, succeeds Harry L. Carrico, who retired after 42 years on the court. A native of Norfolk, VA, Justice Hassell graduated from the University of Virginia with honors in 1977 and earned his juris doctor degree from Harvard Law School in 1980.

He will serve a four-year term as chief justice and will supervise the administration of the state's entire court system.
