Maj. Gen. Lloyd J. Austin III to command Fort Bragg 18th Airborne Corps

Major General Lloyd J. Austin III, United States Army, recently became the first Black to be appointed commanding general of the 18th Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg, in Fort Bragg, NC.

The corps includes the 82nd Airborne Division, the 101st Airborne Division, the 10th Mountain Division and the 3rd Infantry Division. Austin had served as chief of staff, U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base, FL, and formerly commanded the 10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum in New York.

Ceremonies for Gen. Austin were pending at JET press time.

In May Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld announced that President Bush nominated Austin for the appointment.

A native of Georgia, Austin became a second lieutenant in 1975 after he graduated from the U.S. Military Academy and has been stationed in the United States and Germany. His awards include a Silver Star.
