The Chicago Urban League board of directors recently announced the appointment of Cheryle Jackson as the new president and CEO, making her the first woman to lead the social and civil justice organization in its 90-year history.

Jackson, who will succeed James W. Compton, will begin her tenure on October 1.

Jackson currently serves as deputy chief of staff for communications for Illinois' Gov. Blagojevich. She joined his administration in 2003 as communications director and chief press secretary, making her both the first woman and African-American to hold the position in Illinois' history.

The Chicago native and Northwestern University graduate also worked two years in senior-level government affairs positions with Amtrak, first as regional vice president of government and public affairs and later as national director of state and local government affairs.
