PRAYERS FOR HEALING: Annie Bell Thornton, mother of the late Charles "Cookie" Thornton (inset), gestures during a prayer vigil for her family at Douglas Memorial Church of God in Kirkwood, MO, near St. Louis. Local police killed her 52-year-old son, described as a disgruntled asphalt and demolition company owner, after he shot and killed two police officers, two City Council members and the director of public works during a Kirk wood City Council meeting. Thornton's deadly rampage reportedly was the culmination of a nearly decade-long feud with city officials over promised construction work with the city and thousands of dollars in parking tickets and citations issued against his commercial vehicles. News reports also cited his past arrests for disorderly conduct at City Council meetings and a federal lawsuit Thornton filed against the city charging council members violated his right to free speech when he was arrested. The suit was tossed out of court.
