Decatur Expulsions Upheld

Jet, Jan 31, 2000

DECATUR EXPULSIONS UPHELD: The Rev. Jesse Jackson (l) and expelled Decatur, IL, high school student Gregory Howell (r) flank Rainbow/PUSH Coalition attorney Lewis Meyers at PUSH headquarters in Chicago as he responds to a federal court judge's ruling that upheld the expulsion of six Decatur high school students for fighting at a football game (JET, Dec.

6, 1999). U.S. District Judge Michael McCuskey ruled the school board did not act improperly or deny any constitutional rights when it expelled the students following a Sept. 17 brawl. Jackson promised to appeal the decision.
