Truman Gibson Saluted

Jet, August 13, 2001

Noted Chicago lawyer Truman K. Gibson Jr., 89, who was an advisor to Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman, recalls how he worked diligently behind the scenes to help end segregation in the armed forces more than 50 years ago under the Truman administration, during the recent Presidential Advisors Lecture Series at the Truman Presidential Museum & Library in Independence, MO.

Gibson's recent lecture was held on the 53rd anniversary of President Truman's historic order in 1948 that ended segregation in the U.S. military. Below, Gibson is congratulated on his outstanding contributions to America by noted Chicago Sun-Times political columnist Steve Neal, who has written about Gibson's work during the Truman administration and also participated in the lecture series, and Scott Roley, acting director, Truman Presidential Museum & Library.
