New Jersey School Named For Famed Atty. Johnnie Cochran

Jet, Feb 1, 1999

Atty. Johnnie L. Cochran recently was honored in East Orange, NJ, when the Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Academy of Legal Studies and Community Service was officially dedicated to the famed attorney during a ceremony at the school.

The magnet school opened in September last year. Teachers in charge of the school's theme chose Cochran for renaming the school.

He was chosen for his "oratory skills and the way that he can present himself," the school's principal, Deborah Harvest, said. "We thought that he was an excellent role model for our students."

The school, which houses some 300 elementary school students pre-K through 5, offers students a variety of legal classes and encourages students to engage in community service.
