Jet, August 2, 1999

Services recently were held in Chicago for Arthur Nichols Turnbull Sr., the oldest living member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity.

Turnbull, 94, succumbed at Michael Reese Hospital in the city.

A native of Chicago, Turnbull was initiated into the Kappa Alpha Psi Iota Chapter at the University of Chicago in 1925, where he earned a degree from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business in 1926.

He earlier attended Hyde Park High School.

Turnbull worked as a teacher and counselor at Chicago's Dunbar Vocational High School for 27 years.

He also maintained a strong affiliation with his fraternity by serving tirelessly in projects sponsored by Kappa Alpha Psi.

In addition, he served in other community groups and was a member of the Chicago Urban League and NAACP for nearly 50 years.

Turnbull was honored by former Illinois Governors Otto Kerner and Richard Ogilvie for his work with the Illinois Department of Corrections and in 1980 he received the Senior Citizens Hall of Fame Award from the city of Chicago.

He is survived by wife, Elizabeth Mickey Turnbull; son, Arthur Jr.; daughter, Cynthia Turnbull Tolmaire; and seven grandchildren.
