Carl Banks signs pact with ex-rival Redskins - former New York Giants linebacker signs $5.4 million, three-year contract with Washington Redskins - Brief Article
Jet, July 5, 1993
Veteran all-pro linebacker Carl Banks shed his blue New York Giants jersey recently for the maroon of the Washington Redskins. Banks, after nine quality seasons with the Giants, signed with their conference rivals for $5.4 million over three seasons.
Banks, 30, received a $600,000 signing bonus and his yearly salary will be $1.5 million, $1.5 million and $1.8 million.
"I wasn't wanted. I can't force situation if it's not there," Banks said of his departure in the New York Daily News.
An important ingredient of two Super Bowl teams, Banks added, "There's nothing you can do. I don't want to be anywhere I'm not wanted."
When the Giants signed Denver Broncos free agent linebacker Michael Brooks last month, Banks apparently became the odd man out.
He is the fifth unrestricted free agent acquired by the Redskin in the offseason at JET press deadline.
"I had nine great years and I was very loyal. I died for the team and for the players on the team. That's what I'll miss most," Banks reflected.
