Chicago School Board President Sharon Grant apologizes to children in resignation letter

Jet, July 17, 1995

Chicago Board of Education President D. Sharon Grant recently apologized to public school children in a resignation letter to Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley.

In the letter, Grant apologized for any embarrassment caused by her recent tax troubles.

Grant, 54, has been charged with federal and state income tax evasion and could possibly face prison (JET, July 10).

In the letter written by her attorney, Tyrone Fahner, Grant "apologized to the mayor and to the children of Chicago public schools for any embarrassment caused by her personal problems," mayoral press secretary Jim Williams said.

Federal officials have accused Grant of not paying taxes for more than 17 years, and of owing $351,000 in taxes on more than $1 million in total income between 1988 and 1993. In addition, a Cook County grand jury has indicted Grant on charges of failing to file state income taxes from 1990 to 1993.

Authorities have said she deliberately misled federal officials about her finances. Grant had been school board president since 1993.
