Jet, Jan 22, 1996

Microsoft Corporation and The College Fund/UNCF recently announced a partnership designed to foster the link between higher education and high technology. Microsoft's $10.1 million software gift was announced during "The Lou Rawls Parade of Stars", an annual telethon that benefits The College Fund/UNCF and airs nationally before an audience of 25 million viewers. This is the largest single gift in the history of the telethon.

William H. Gray, president and CEO of The College Fund/UNCF, said, "Microsoft's commitment to education is evident in its actions here today--in both its generous gift to The College Fund and its outreach to area students."

Gray added, "America's success in the global marketplace is directly linked to its success in the field of high technology. In the next 10 years, the majority of American workers will be minorities. America's ability to compete depends on educating these future leaders."

Bill Gates, chairman and CEO of Microsoft Corporation said, "We believe this partnership will dramatically improve the information infrastructure and curricula currently available to UNCF and its member institutions."

Gates continued, "We are excited to be a significant part of The College Fund's effort to create a pool of highly qualified graduates that can make important contributions in the high tech industry."

The new partnership includes:

* Windows 95 and Window Office software packages that will be given to UNCF colleges for student and faculty use.

* In-depth summer programs for selected UNCF faculty, who will participate in seminars at Microsoft's headquarters. Participating faculty also will receive software donations.

* Equipping computer science depart ments with Microsoft software and developing curricula at UNCF colleges in collaboration with UNCF computer science faculty.

* Network software packages to enhance UNCF's ability to link its area offices and headquarters. Ultimately, this electronic network will include UNCF's 41 member colleges.

* Donations of services to assist UNCF in developing and maintaining a World Wide Web site.
