Arthur Ashe says Magic should not have quit - Magic Johnson

Jet, Jan 11, 1993

Former tennis star Arthur Ashe, who disclosed earlier this year that he is infected with the AIDS virus, says that Earvin "Magic" Johnson shouldn't have retired from basketball because of the complaints from some opposing players.

I certainly wish Magic had hung around and shown more perseverance," said Ashe, who contracted the disease from a blood transfusion. "The chances are so small that anyone would get HIV from him you can't measure it," said Ashe. "All the medical experts with the latest. knowledge were telling everyone in the NBA Magic is no danger at all but they didn't believe it." Ashe also was understanding of Utah Jazz star Karl Malone, who publicly worried about competing against Magic."

"Karl Malone has a wife or mother or children who want more proof," said Ashe. "They were all worried about Magic on the court. They were afraid they would get HIV from him. In that case, they should be testing everyone else. Who knows who out there in the NBA is HIV-positive now?"
