John Lucas straps on Spurs head coach job - San Antonio Spurs - Brief Article

Jet, Jan 11, 1993

Former NBA guard John Lucas, who battled cocaine abuse during his career, has been hired to coach the San Antonio Spurs, replacing coach Jerry Tarkanian.

Lucas, 39, most recently was part owner and head coach of a United States Basketball League team. He also runs a successful aftercare program that treated some NBA stars.

Lucas becomes the NBA's third Black head coach, joining Cleveland's Lenny Wilkens and Washington's Wes Unseld. He doesn't plan any major changes for the struggling Spurs.

"I need to see where we are and make sure we can win with what we have," said Lucas. "One thing that makes basketball an easy game for me is it's a people game. I hope the guys want to play because they want to play."
