FDA approves quicker test for chlamydia - sexually transmitted disease - Brief Article

Jet, July 12, 1993

A quicker, more accurate test has been approved by the Food & Drug Administration for chlamydia, the sexually transmited disease that afflicts four million Americans and can lead to sterility and infertility.

The new test can detect the disease through a male urine specimen or with a swab sample of the cervix or urethra. Men are the primary carriers of chlamydia, but often show no symptoms. FDA Commissioner David A. Kessler said he hopes more men will be tested now that the disease can be detected through a less painful method.
