In the first big trade during the NBA summ6er hiatus, the New Jersey Nets dealt center Sam Bowie to the Los Angeles Lakers for Benoit Benjamin and a future second-round draft pick.
Nets general manager Willis Reed said the trade was to help cushion the blow of the accidental death of star Croatian guard Drazen Petrovic and the possible loss of center Chris Dudley.
Bowie, a 7-foot-1 pivot man out of Kentucky, is 32 years old and has been injury prone throughout his professional and collegiate career.
Reed coached Benjamin, also a 7-footer, when he was a head coach at Creighton (Neb.) University. Benjamin is 28.
