Jet, July 12, 1993

Perhaps the admittance of a Black doctor into an all-White Long Island, N.Y., golf club is a measure to prevent the U.S. Golf Association from wrenching the 1995 U.S. Open from the prestious club. But some experts see as a chance to tear down racial barriers in golf.

The formerly all-White Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton recently admitted Dr. William Curry, a New York Hospital surgeon.

Elliott Vose, president of Shinnecock Hills, bristled at the notion Curry's membership was granted to save the tournaiment or he was picked because he lived 100 miles away.
