* On this day Garrett A. Morgan invented the traffic light. In 1912 he developed a gas mask. Many police departments and fire departments throughout the United States became equipped with Morgan's gas mask. In 1916 his gas mask made it possible for the rescue of more than 20 workers trapped in a smoke-filled water tunnel in Cleveland.
