Jet, July 19, 1993

A Superior Court judge recently awarded a women's basketball coach at Howard University in Washington, D.C., $1.14 million in a sexual discrimination suit against the university.

Sanya Tyler filed suit in 1991 claiming that her job description was the same as the men's basketball coach but his salary was nearly double hers, according to court records.

The Superior Court jury had awarded her $2.3 million in the case, but Judge Arthur Burnett Sr. reduced the award.

Tyler was represented by Atty. Robert Bell in her case against the university. Howard General Counsel Francis Smith told JET, "The university still plans on pursuing post trial motions and/or an appeal."
