Jordan records 20,000 career points 2nd fastest - Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls

Jet, Jan 25, 1993

The accolades continue to pile up for Chicago Bulls superstar Michael Jordan, who recently ascended to the 20,000-point plateau faster than any player except for legendary center Wilt Chamberlain.

Jordan, the league's leading scorer with a 32.2 points per game average, needed 35 points to reach the 20,000 mark when the Bulls battled the Milwaukee Bucks on Jan. 8.

He scored his 35th point midway through the fourth quarter to the delight of Chicago Stadium fans.

Jordan had recorded his 5,000, 10,000 and 15,000 points all on the road, but finally rewarded his hometown fans with a scoring milestone.

Jordan, who reached the milestone in 620 games, fell well short of Chamberlain's feat of reaching 20,000 points in 499 games.

"It looks like I fell short of Wilt Chamberlain again, which is a privilege," Jordan said. "I won't evaluate this (scoring 20,000 points) until I'm away from the game. I'm happy about it, but we still have a long season to go. I'm sure as I get older I'll cherish it more."

Jordan is also leading the voting for the NBA All-Star Game.

Other players to score 20,000 points in fewer than 700 games are Oscar Robertson (671) and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (684).

Atlanta's Dominique Wilkins has reached 20,000 points earlier this year and Washington Bullets forward Bernard King needs 535 points. King is set to be activated soon after sitting out 16 months with a knee injury.

Jordan is trying, to tie another of Chamberlain's many NBA records this season by becoming the second player to lead the league in scoring seven consecutive seasons.
