Uniforms being considered for Detroit Public School students as means of reducing violence
Jet, Jan 31, 1994
The Detroit Public School District is exploring the possibility of requiring standardized uniforms for its 170,000 students as a means of focusing on books instead of looks.
Deputy Superintendent Arthur M. Carter told JET that the idea is the brainchild of Superintendent David L. Sneed, who took over the public school system in December.
"He's only exploring the possibility. He has not proposed or mandated anything," Carter explained.
"He just feels that there's too much emphasis being placed on expensive gym shoes, jackets, jewelry and what have you."
The idea is viewed as a first step toward getting students to place less value on trendy clothes and more on the importance of a good education, Carter said.
"We're working with the community and with the parents to show the benefits. Violence that goes on outside the schools, ultimately has an impact on the schools. We feel this is a Possible solution."
