Philadelphia settles with estates of MOVE members

Jet, Feb 17, 1997

The city of Philadelphia has reached a settlement with relatives of two members of the MOVE group killed when police bombed the group's rowhouse. Under the agreement, the city will pay more than $500,000 each to the estates of MOVE founder John Africa and Frank James Africa, who were among 11 people found dead after the city's confrontation with the group in 1985. After trading gunfire, officers dropped a bomb from a helicopter onto the roof of the MOVE house. The bomb, intended to open a hole for tear gas, started a fire that destroyed 61 other homes.
