Grambling's athletic program placed on two years' probation by NCAA

Grambling State's athletic program has been placed on two years' probation by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

But the school's football program managed to escape severe penalty as it heads into the final coaching season of the legendary Eddie Robinson, the winningest coach in college football.

The NCAA cited infractions in football, men's basketball and women's basketball.

Football violations included improper recruiting contacts with prospective transfer athletes, improper tryouts and out-of-season practices.

For allowing a player whose ACT score had been invalidated in 1993-94 and 1995-96, the women's team will have to forfeit the games in which she played.

The NCAA committee allowed Grambling football fewer recruiting visits, down six from 65 to 59. Also the coaching staff must receive on-campus compliance education and training from the school's compliance officer.
