Blacks victims of most hate crimes - FBI study - Brief Article

Blacks are the victims of most hate crimes, according to a recently released study by the FBI.

In the nation's first-ever report, on hate crimes, racial bias motivated six of 10 offenses reported last year to the nearly 3,000 law enforcement agencies in 32 states participating in the study.

Among the specific bias types, anti-black offenses accounted for the highest percentage, 36 percent of the total.

A vast majority of agencies - 16,000 - did not participate in the study, which was initiated in response to the Hate Crime Statistics Act of 1990.

A total of 4,558 hate crime incidents involving 4,755 separate offenses were reported in 1991.

Also the majority - 36.8 percent - of the offenders in hate crimes were White.
